Reps. Price and Buchanan Issue Statement on Crisis Unfolding in Afghanistan
WASHINGTON, DC (August 16, 2021) -- Today, Chairman David Price and Co-Chair Vern Buchanan of the bipartisan House Democracy Partnership (HDP) released a statement on the situation in Afghanistan:
“We are monitoring the dangerous and deteriorating situation in Afghanistan, whose Parliament has been a part of the House Democracy Partnership since 2006, with tremendous concern.
“We support the rapid deployment of sufficient U.S. troops to protect the evacuation of American and foreign diplomats. We strongly urge that these troops remain in Kabul for as long as required to secure the safe and orderly evacuation of Afghans who have worked with the U.S. mission, including NGOs and contract employees.
“For the last 15 years, HDP has worked with the Wolesi Jirga on a range of issues, establishing a parliamentary library and exchanging best practices for effective legislative performance. This peer-to-peer collaboration would not have been possible without the exceptional work of numerous Afghans – including those who worked with U.S.-based NGOs and civil society organizations.
“These brave men and women deserve our support and protection now, and those who wish to depart must be given priority. Our military protection must not be terminated prematurely. We remain in awe of the courage of devoted Members and staff of the Afghan Parliament - especially women Members and staff - as well as those who have facilitated their work. Many now need our protection, and we cannot fail them.
