Price Statement on the One-Year Anniversary of the Trump Administration’s Withdraw from the Iran Nuclear Agreement
WASHINGTON, DC (May 8, 2019) – Congressman David Price (D-NC) released the following statement on the one-year anniversary of the Trump administration abandoning the agreement to limit Iran’s nuclear weapons capabilities:
“One year ago, today, President Trump made the reckless decision, unilaterally, to cast aside years of painstaking diplomacy and to withdraw from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). He thereby emboldened Iranian hardliners and increased the prospect of a nuclear armed Iran. Iranian President Rouhani’s announcement this morning that Iran may partially resume nuclear activity shows the real danger of President Trump’s decision to abandon diplomacy and to jeopardize national and regional security for domestic political gain.
“Starting with the withdrawal from the JCPOA, this administration’s actions—to deny JCPOA-related economic benefits to Iran (despite Iranian compliance), to double down on economic sanctions that punish the Iranian people, and to increase escalatory rhetoric and posturing—have failed to bring Iran back to the negotiating table and instead have put at risk an agreement that Iran has honored and that has effectively blocked its development of nuclear weapons capacity.
“The United States must once again commit itself to serious diplomacy and rejoin the JCPOA to restore its global leadership and credibility, to prevent a military confrontation with Iran, and to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.”
