Price Calls for Congress to Act after SCOTUS Fails to End Partisan Gerrymandering

June 27, 2019
Press Release

WASHINGTON, DC (June 27, 2019) – Following the Supreme Court ruling allowing the practice of partisan gerrymandering to continue, Congressman David Price (D-NC) released the following statement urging action in Congress:

“I’m greatly disappointed by today’s Supreme Court ruling allowing state legislatures to continue cherry picking their voters through extreme partisan gerrymandering,” said Congressman Price.  “North Carolinians know this problem all too well, with large segments of our population systematically silenced through imbalanced districts drawn by Republicans in the General Assembly.”

“Democracy thrives when its representative bodies are a true reflection of its people, which is why I introduced the We the People Act to end this practice once and for all by creating nonpartisan, independent redistricting commissions to draw district lines.  Similar provisions were included in H.R. 1, For the People Act, which passed the House in March.  While today’s ruling is discouraging, it puts the ball squarely in our court.  Congress, state legislatures, and concerned citizens should redouble our efforts to restore our democracy and return power to the people.”
